A major step towards a medically certified respiratory monitoring product

An important milestone has now been reached in the development of EloCare M50, Elotec AS's proprietary and patented technology for contactless, continuous and automated respiratory monitoring. In collaboration with Smerud Medical Research International AS, we have now submitted applications for clinical trials. These are now being assessed by the ethics committee (REK KULMU) and the Directorate for Medical Products (DMP).

Changes in respiratory rate, one of the key parameters in vital signs monitoring, may indicate increased disease severity, potential adverse outcomes, and an elevated risk of death. Implementing medical devices for accurate and continuous non-contact patient monitoring of respiratory rate is therefore of great importance for patient safety. EloCare M50 is a miniaturized radar-based breath sensor (approximately the size of a smoke detector) that continuously collects data on patients’ respiratory activity from its ceiling-mounted position, without requiring active involvement from healthcare personnel.

The clinical investigation will assess the accuracy of EloCare M50 compared with a medically approved reference device. This represents an important step towards obtaining medical approval for EloCare M50, and the investigation is planned to be followed by a new and larger clinical trial in 2027.
